It was found in the branches of a tree in Church Way, Sanderstead in 1948. Doodlebugs were launched from northern France. Five minutes later they rattled to a halt and dived into England. The first doodlebug to fall on Croydon hit the garden of 64 Warminster Road on 15 June 1944. A three month long attack followed. The British government deliberately exaggerated reports of doodlebugs hitting north London to protect densely populated areas. the Germans shortened their aim and south London bore the brunt of the bombing. 142 doodlebugs fell on Croydon killing 215 people and injuring 1996.
